MGA The Best Loved British Sports
Car |
 |
Every now and then an
outstanding car comes along that is in absolutely gorgeous condition
and a buying opportunity you don't want to miss. A true classic
British Roadster that has been extremely well taken care of and
looks like it just came off the showroom floor.

There are very few cars today, or yesterday for that matter, who
can boast such a close resemblance with the racing prototype as the
timeless MGA. And unlike the MGA, most of these exotic machines come
with price tags and temperaments to match.

In 1955, after an absence of 30 years, the MG car company
announced its participation in the legendary 24-hour race at Le
Mans. The cars entered in the race actually turned out to be the
prototypes for a new production car.

The streamlined MGA - the first production MG capable of topping
100mph - was a major departure from the upright cars the factory in
Abington, England had produced since the 1930's. The driver actually
sits in the car rather than on the car as one does in the T-series
MG's.

After their impressive Le Mans finish MG developed the production
series MGA without making major changes to the handmade alloy
prototypes. Only detail modifications for every-day road use were
made.
Off course there were differences between the racing cars
and the production models but the road holding, braking and steering
very intimately recall the Le Mans race cars.

The debut of the MGA Roadster was made at the Frankfurt Auto Show
in September of 1955 where it literally got off to a flying start.
The motoring press was very excited about the 'Wellbuilt Sports
Machine' and the buying public obviously couldn't agree more.
By
the time the last MGA rolled off the production line in June of 1962
it had earned the title of the most popular sports car ever
produced.

Driving the MGA really is a joy. Once you're sitting in the
driver's seat you get the immediate impression that the car had been
tailored to fit. The driving position is excellent with the seat low
down below the level of the frame.

You turn the ignition key pull the choke and the engine fires
right up even after sitting for days or weeks. The original 1500 cc
engine does not smoke, it has excellent oil pressure and runs cool
and strong for hours. There is an immediate response to the throttle
and you'll be able to accelerate from 0 - 60 mph in just 14.3
seconds. The engine develops approximately 68 bhp and the car is
capable of a top speed of nearly 100 mph.

Highway driving at 55 miles an hour is a pleasure, not a task but
the car feels most at home on curvier countryside or mountain roads.
Marvelous road handling is definitely one of the MGA's nicest
features. Precision rack and pinion steering, tight suspension and
responsive brakes put you in control of this Classic Timeless
Roadster.

This gorgeous MGA looks handsome from any angle and it is as
beautiful in reality as it shows in the photographs. The black paint
has been color sanded and buffed to a mirror-like finish that looks
truly stunning.

But even more importantly, what's underneath the beautiful paint is as remarkable as
the remainder of the MGA.
It is an original West Coast car and
has spent its entire life in a sunny and dry climate. It has hardly
ever seen a drop of rain in its lifetime. The body is totally
straight and rock solid.

I could not find a spot of rust or even minor body damage or
covered up repair anywhere. Everything speaks of a true classic that
has never experienced an accident and has always been well cared
for. You will not even find a parking lot dent or scratch
anywhere.

The passenger compartment is well appointed with comfortable
seats, carpeting and nicely laid out instruments. The red interior
has been completely renewed to match the car's overall appearance.
New correct red seats, new red door and interior panels and
new black carpet. The cockpit rails are a matching red with all new
piping.

The entire chrome on the car shines like new. It has either been
replaced with quality parts or remains in original and excellent
condition.
The weather stripping and all rubber parts are new,
nothing is dry or brittle and there is certainly no paint over spray
on any rubber or chrome or any other place where it does not
belong.

The factory original 60-spoke wire wheels are redone, they were
powder coated with a proper silver finish, all four chrome knock
offs are brand new and perfect. Naturally the 165 SR15 tires are
brand new and professionally mounted and balanced.

The engine compartment is nicely detailed and includes a polished aluminum valve cover, polished
carburetors and proper dark red paint on the engine.

Even thought the MGA is in remarkable condition, please keep in
mind that it is 44 year old and has been driven an unknown number of
miles. Like most other British classics the MGA's electrical system
needs some improvement and attention. It is also important to
understand when buying a classic automobile that it is not
comparable to today's new cars. Driving & handling
characteristics are quite different than what you are used to from
your late model daily driver. Since this roadster will most likely
never see rain again I found the tonneau cover quite adequate.
Convertible top and side curtains do not come with the car, but the
top bows are included.

However, this beauty handles surprisingly well for a 44 year old
true classic. This is why the MGA is the best loved British Sports
Car.
It's impressive condition will earn you admiring looks and
compliments wherever you go.
And it is no surprise people are
impressed, this car is a stunner.
